Does Ohio law require alcohol awareness training?

While there’s no mandate in Ohio that requires you to take an alcohol training course, it is recommended. Plus, many employers want you to get trained if you’re going to serve or sell alcohol in the course of your employment. That’s because it could reduce their penalties if someone does violate the law and serve someone underage.

Specifically, Chapter 4301.253, in Ohio’s Liquor Control Law states that your employer may receive mitigating benefits if they require alcohol training that covers these topics:

  • The statutes and rules that govern the sale of beer, wine, mixed beverages, and intoxicating liquor
  • How to prevent the illegal serving of beer, wine, mixed beverages, and intoxicating liquor to persons under 21
  • Conflict management skills in alcohol-related situations
  • Methods to safely evacuate the premises of a permit holder in an emergency

While there’s no list of specifically approved providers, you can be confident that your training course from Learn2Serve by 360training covers all of these topics.

How long does responsible alcohol server certification last?

Check with your employer to see what they prefer, but we always recommend re-taking your alcohol server training course every 2-3 years.

Why should I take Ohio alcohol server training?

Besides the fact that training can reduce penalties, increasing your understanding of how to reduce the risks when serving alcohol helps your entire community.

For example, Ohio has a higher rate of drunk driving fatalities than the national average. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of 3,637 people were killed in crashes involving a drunk driver in Ohio from 2003 to 2012.

By practicing what you learn in alcohol server training, you can help bring that number down.

What jobs can I get with my alcohol server certificate?

Alcohol training is useful for many jobs at all kind of establishments:

  • Bartenders at a hotel
  • Barback at the local pub
  • Servers at high-end restaurants
  • Grocery store clerks
